Stop the mercury poisoning of the Yanomami

WHAT WE'RE ASKING FOR

Addressed to Brazil's Federal Public Prosecutor's Office and the national mining agency

We, the undersigned, call on the Ministério Público Federal and the Agência Nacional de Mineração to enforce existing law: to halt illegal gold mining inside Yanomami territory, to hold the financiers of that mining accountable, and to fund the clean-up and health response the contamination demands.

Why it matters

Mercury used to separate gold does not wash away. It moves up the food chain and into people. The communities we work in partnership with are on the frontline - and they are also the guardians who keep neighbouring peoples living in isolation undisturbed.

A petition is not a substitute for enforcement. But a public, named list of people who are watching raises the cost of inaction - and it is where our own campaign begins.
