The Indigenous Storytelling Lab
The satellite links we help install are not only for emergencies. They are a broadcast tower. Youth and women in the territories are being trained and equipped to document their own culture, and their own crises, in their own words.
WHY THIS MATTERS
When outsiders tell the story, the story goes wrong
Coverage of connected Indigenous villages has repeatedly been written by people who have never been to one. The most reliable correction is not a press release from us. It is footage, audio and writing produced inside the territory, by the people living there, published under their own names.
A community that can film and publish does not need anyone to speak for it. That is the whole point of the programme.
HOW THE LAB WORKS
Four moving parts
01
Cohorts for youth and women
A training cohort in each participating territory, with a dedicated intake for women. Photography, video, audio, interviewing and basic editing, taught in the village rather than in a city.

A lab that lives on the satellite link
Footage is shot in the village and uploaded over the solar-powered connection the community already runs. No one has to travel days downriver to hand over a memory card.
03
Two standing series
One preserves: elders, seeds, foods, medicine, language. One reports: mining, mercury, invasions, and what the community is doing about them.

Published under their names
Communicators keep authorship and control of their material. Nothing is published without free, prior and informed consent, and consent can be withdrawn.

FIRST COHORT
The Javari cohort starts where the connectivity programme already reaches, under the association Enoque presides over. Communicators there will document how the villages actually use their link - schooling, medical evacuation, territorial alerts.

CRISIS REPORTING
Yanomami communicators are the closest witnesses to illegal mining and mercury contamination. Footage recorded by the affected communities themselves is evidence no press trip can produce.

Individual youth and women communicators will be profiled here by name once each cohort is formed and each person has consented to being named.

An audio series, because audio travels
A voice memo needs a fraction of the bandwidth a video does. Leaders record updates on their phones and send them over the same link - unedited, in their own language, subtitled by the lab.

FUND THE LAB
Equip one cohort
A cohort is cameras, microphones, memory cards, a laptop for editing, and a trainer in the village for the length of the course. The connection is already there.
What a cohort needs
•Cameras, tripods and field microphones
•An editing laptop that stays in the village
•Storage, power and spare batteries
•A trainer in residence for the course
•Translation and subtitling of finished pieces
